DIY Finishing Powder

Almost three years ago, I bought Bare Minerals make up for my wedding.  It lasted for quite a while, however, once it was gone, I couldn't justify spending THAT much money on make up.

As I was cleaning out my make up bag, I discovered the last little bit of mineral veil powder left in its jar.  In my pregnant brain, the thought occurred to me: "That looks just like baby powder." I currently have 75 lbs of baby powder at my house.  (Well, maybe not that much, but it seems like it. We got several containers at baby showers.)  I put on my make up and tried out the baby powder on top.  It worked pretty well, but made me look washed out (duh, it's white powder).  To tint it, I added a little bit of cocoa powder.  That solved that problem (and made me hungry for brownies).

One last issue with it: it didn't really stay on for too long.  My skin would start to get oily and the powder didn't do too much to stop it.  Solution: corn starch. Voila! I had done it. Cheap "mineral veil" that works basically the same for a fraction of the cost. So here's the breakdown:

1 tbs cornstarch
1/2 tbs baby powder*
sprinkling of cocoa powder  (add a little, stir a little, until you reach your desired shade)

Apply with a big puffy brush on top of your make up.

*Recently I've had a lot of emails and comments talking about the baby powder component of this.  I wasn't aware that there were different kinds of baby powder (first-time mom!), but the kind I used is pure cornstarch infused with aloe and vitamin E.

  1. I love Bare Minerals, too, but not their price, so this recipe sounds interesting. Talc makes me break out horribly, though, so I'll have to try it with talc-free baby powder. Thanks for sharing!

I'd love if you'd come join my How To Tuesday link party, too.

    2. Health FYI: Talc is documented as contributing to respiration issues. Please research the harmful effects of breathing in talcum powder.

    3. After researching talcum powder and a visit to the doctor, my husband stop stopped using talcum to dust himself because of persistent congested-sounding coughing. Almost 100% improvement.

Thanks for sharing at Project Inspire{d} ~ and I know the feeling of having 75 pounds of baby powder ~ my youngest is 7 and I'm finally polishing off the last 5 pounds of it ;)

    Have a great week!

  7. I love bare minerals, but it definitely breaks the budget. I will have to try this considering I'm almost out of what I have left - also a wedding makeup purchase!

  8. I'm gonna have to try this!Found you via Somewhat Simple linky. I'm a powder junkie and I use Mary Kay. It's not too expensive but my skin is a little oily and I wonder if this will help.

  10. I'm intrigued! I've seen people make dry shampoo with similar ingredients. I didn't think about making a finishing powder. I'm going to pin it and might try this out once I am out of my powder.

  12. I mostly just wear eye shadow because face makeup has always made my face oily and break out. But I do have some bare minerals to. And it is expensive. And the color of eye shadow that I like is only sold in the trial kit. Can't buy individually, and I don't need the other stuff. I read somewhere that cocoa can be used as eye shadow, and a lot cheaper. The only problem with using cocoa is, makes you want to lick your I lids (-; plus it would probably make you crave those brownies.

  19. Thanks for sharing this recipe!! Glad it works so well for you. I don't really use powder too often, though when I do my skin looks smoother. I just don't spend much money on make-up. This is a good solution! Thanks for sharing this at Romance on a dime!

  27. I accidentally bought a foundation mineral powder too dark for my skin so added cornstarch and tripled it. I read you can also add cinnamon or nutmeg to get a different tone

  29. I would love to try this!!
the only concern should be adding cocoa to my face... i know is natural but i can't help but imaging getting ants all over (i know cocoa isn't sweet, I'm just weird)..
I have being wondering.. and maybe i can add a bit of Food Grade Coloring Powder instead of the cocoa, so I'm sure there's no flavor at all in it...

  30. I got so excited I had to make some up even though I don't have all the ingredients. I used body powder (it does have a little talc, but mostly cornstarch) and a little Mexican hot cocoa mix. The powder has a slight vanilla floral scent, so it mixed with the cinnamon hot cocoa fragrance beautifully, though it's barely descernible. The texture is wonderful. I know there is sugar in the mix, but so far it doesn't seem to matter. That gives me $25 more dollars for the vacation fund!
